2019 Toyota Highlander Wiring Parts Needed to Use with Autowbrake Brake Controller

Updated 08/28/2025 | Published 08/21/2025

Question:

I have a 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid LTD AWD with factory 4 pin wiring. I’d like to get the Autowbrake to connect to a trailer and handle its brakes. Do I also need to convert to a 7 pin wire? Which product would I need for this if so? What will installation consist of?

Hey Jermaine, thanks for reaching out!

I see that you've picked up the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit # ETBC7L to activate the Autowbrake Electric Brake Controller # 3430001, which is exactly what you need to accomplish this!

The installation is fairly simple as you'll plug it into your existing 4-Way and then run the black power cord up to the battery on your Highlander (and through the circuit breaker). We've done this installation on a 2023 Highlander, so I've linked that video to this page for your reference.

What drew you to this brake controller?

During my research I found some people were having issues with the direct brake controller install and the Hybrid battery setup on the Highlander. Dealerships and other installers recommended a remote brake controller as well. Between the Curt Echo and Autowbrake, it seemed unanimous the latter was the more reliable choice based on anecdotal evidence across various sites and forums.

@Jermaine Awesome - glad to hear it! I'd love to get your feedback from both the wiring and the brake controller after you've had a little bit of time to use them!
