Updated 09/02/2025 | Published 08/12/2025

Question:

I have a trailer with Dexter 3500 idler axle. I want to switch from 5 lug to 6 lug hubs. Not sure which ones will fit this axle. It’s a 18 model utlity trailer.

Hello Chris, thanks for reaching out. We do carry 6-lug hubs for a Dexter 3,500 lb axle. For that I recommend the following:

- Easy Grease Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 3.5K Axles - 6 on 5-1/2 - Pre-Greased # AKIHUB-655-35-EZ-K

This fits a standard 3,500 lb axle. It uses the # L68149 (1.378" inner diameter) inner bearing and # L44649 (1.063" inner diameter) outer bearing. As long as your axle was made within the last 20 or so years it should use this same standard bearing combination. Older axles may not be made to this same standard though.

Any idea when your axle was made? Does it still have a tag or sticker attached? That should help me confirm which hub will fit. Or if you can see a part number cast on the current idler hubs, I may be able to use that to pull up your bearing info. Just want to be sure you are getting the right thing. But like I said if you axle is less than 20-25 years old you will be fine and the hub I mentioned above will work great. The hub will work with wheels from 14-1/2" to 16-1/2" in diameter.
