Solution for Trailer Brake Actuator that Has Movement When Starting and Stopping
Updated 06/30/2025 | Published 06/13/2025 >
Question:
I have a 2007 ranger boat trailer. It has a surge brake that doesn’t work and I’m looking at putting a different hitch so I don’t have the “give” when starting and stopping. Do you have a suggestion? I would be guessing if I picked one. I bought a Fulton jack from you guys and love it. Great upgrade from the ranger jack that failed. Thanks for advice

Hey Jayson, do you know what brand and model actuator you have? it sounds like the strut needs to be replaced and that will take care of the issue you have based on what you described. Do the brakes seem to work though?

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I’m slow. I assume my brakes work…. I just bought this boat and this is how it was so I can’t confirm. This hitch is different from others I’ve seen…. Only way to lock out the surge seems to be a 1/2” bolt through the top middle of the hitch. When I did this with a grade 8 bolt, the bolt split after 2 trips. I don’t want to fix the surge unless I can lock it out…. Don’t want to be stuck at a ramp and can’t back it up. I dont see a way to include a picture in this reply Thanks!
