Parts Needed to Swap UFP A-70 Surge Coupler to Work W/ Electric-Over-Hydraulic Brakes

Updated 01/16/2025 | Published 01/08/2025

Question:

I have a boat trailer with a UFP A-70 surge coupler. Im going to go to electric brakes. Is there a replacement fixed coupler I can replace it with? It should I just lock the coupler out? How do I determine what brakes I need for my axle?

Stan, so it sounds like you want to go from surge to electric over hydraulic braking. What you need to do then is get an actuator # HBA-10 for drum or # HBA16 for disc, a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195, and then finally lock out the coupler or replace it with a standard coupler like # DM15000-52.

If there is anything else I'm missing or that you have questions with, feel free to come back and drop a comment and I'd be happy to help :)

@BryceD If I'm removing the hydraulic brakes and going to electric at the hub, how do I determine what set up I need?

@Stan Sorry that's my bad for assuming that you wanted EOH. If you're just going to electric brakes you can just lock the coupler out and some electric braking assemblies like the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly # 23-105 & # 23-106. These braking assemblies are for 6,000 lb axles, so if you need something different let me know what size axles you have and I'll take a look at what we have.
