Are the Clamps on the Old Thule J Hooks Kayak Carrier Supposed to Have Some Padding On Them?

Updated 06/13/2025 | Published 06/07/2025

Question:

Greetings - we have a set of older Thule kayak J hooks. The ones that mount to crossbars and that dont fold. Ive noticed that the hooks rub the paint off the crossbars. This wasnt a problem on our old vehicle but now that we have a new one . . . . Are there supposed to be pads between the hooks and the crossbars? Because if yes mine have disappeared along the way. Would you have suggestions for something we could use? Are we missing a part perhaps? Advice appreciated. AEH

Hello Andrew,

The clamps do not come with any kind of padding, if you look at the Replacement Metal Bracket for Thule Roof Mounted Carriers
# 853-5513 it does not have any padding, it is just bare metal.

I cannot suggest modifying the clamps because it will go against what Thule has tested.

With that said, if I were to use some padding I would grab some like some weather stripping with an adhesive on the back. Nothing too thick of can cause the clams to fail on the bars, maybe even slide from side to side.

What kind of Kayaks do you have? Do you have a specific lake or river you like to go out on?

Hi Kate, thanks for the follow up. I agree that keeping the boats securely on the roof is more important than preserving the paint on the bars. We're in VT, just upgraded to a couple of Necky 14' ers. Mostly go out on local pond and lakes. AEH

@AndrewH Very nice Andrew! I like to be out on the water as much as possible, but I am still chasing a 10 pound Bass. Be safe out there =)
