Best/Most Robust Trailer Hitch For 2002 Chevy Tahoe

Updated 05/28/2025 | Published 05/17/2025

Question:

For my 2002 Chevy Tahoe, what is the most robust hitch you recommend? I’m unsure whether square or round tubing is preferable. Thanks! Dale

Hello Dale, thanks for reaching out. The best/most robust hitch for your 2002 Chevy Tahoe is the Curt Class 4 Hitch # 14080. It has a 10,000 lb towing capacity and a 1,000 lb towing capacity, which is higher than any other hitch made for your vehicle. It has a square tube design, but honestly the square or round tube does not make a huge difference in functionality. Although I will say most heavy-duty hitches are square tube.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Ok and what weight distribution / sway bar setup do you recommend for my vehicle? I’m wondering if the rigid style is better or the chain style. Also do you recommend one or two (or none?) anti-sway control devices?

@Dale So I consider the "rigid" style to be more effective than the chain style. The correct WD system will depend on your trailers loaded tongue weight. Do you know the loaded tongue weigh and/or GVWR? Let me know and I am happy to make a recommendation.

@JesseM The dry weight is 4,800 lbs and the GVWR is 7,470 lbs.

@Dale Great so the tongue weight is typically 10%-15% of the gross weight so your tongue weight should be around like 800-900 lbs. For that I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control # EQ37100ET which is for tongue weight between 600 and 1,000 lbs. The Equal-i-zer are surge brake compatible, and will give you great results with good ride leveling and sway reduction.
