Best Towing Gear for a 2019 Volkswagen Atlas with the Factory Tow Package

Updated 09/30/2025 | Published 05/14/2025

Question:

Hi Guys, I was pulling my 3600 lb camper with a p/u truck equipped with a weight distribution hitch. I now have a 2019 VW Atlas with the tow package. Ive read that you should not use a wgt dist hitch on a uni-body frame, as it can damage the vehicle. What set up do you guys recommend?

Hey David, thanks for reaching out!

A few years ago I would have said you're up the river without a paddle, but fortunately there has been some towing equipment made in the recent past that can help mitigate the lack of a weight distribution hitch.

The Curt Shock Absorbing Towing Kit # C57DR is what I recommend you pick up for your trailer towing. You'll likely need to flip the ball mount over in the rise position for your towing setup, but this kit provides you with everything you need to gain more control over your trailer; a cushioned hitch ball, a brake controller, and the friction sway control. This is the best setup you're going to find as far as parts go without using a weight distribution system.

The hitch ball is a 2-5/16" so you'll want to verify the size of your coupler as well.

What are your thoughts on this kit?

Thanks for the suggestion Jon. I haven't purchased the kit yet so I can't give you any feedback at this point. I plan to get the kit sometime within the next couple of months, as my p/u truck lease ends in November
