What to Do If Coupler is Designed to Fit Wider Trailer Channel

Updated 11/17/2025 | Published 12/20/2024

Question:

If the coupler is 2 7/8inch wide, and the channel is 3, how is the best way to take up the 1/8inch difference so the coupler doesnt wobble around. Im replacing a coupler that had a lot of wobble and the mounting holes had elongated due to the movement, and Id like to avoid this happening again. I am considering using washers as shims, but hoping there is a better way.

Hey Steve, so I think you maybe worded what you were trying to explain backwards but I know what you are asking about. If the coupler was designed to fit a slightly wider frame channel what is best way to take up the extra room?

In that situation we recommending having thin spacers welded to either side of the frame channel. So for a difference of 1/8 inch you'd want to have 1/16 inch spacers welded on either side.

Hey Steve, how did it go adding the 1/16-inch spacers to your trailer channel? Did that take care of the wobble you were seeing with the coupler? Your results could help others trying to tighten up a similar fit.
