Can Reese Weight Distribution Hitch Use Curt 2-1/2" Shank

Updated 10/27/2025 | Published 03/18/2025

Question:

Hello, I have a question about shanks for weight distribution hitches. I currently run a Reese weight/dist assembly now for my travel trailer. I’m looking to go from a 2” shank to a 2.5” shank to fit my truck hitch better and gain a little more since my truck is lifted. Curious if I can swap to other brand shanks like Curtis or whatever, that’s a 2.5” shank and has more . Just wondering if I can have a different brand shank than the hitch and if the side holes will line up to my hitch holes. Thanks. -Duelly

Hey Duelly! Yes, you can use the Curt # C17132 or # C17131 with your Reese system. Most weight distribution hitches use a standard shank that crosses over between brands. If you're looking for a different rise/drop the Equal-i-zer you looked at will also work. You can choose from the following:

- Max 7" Rise, 3" Drop: Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Shank - 2-1/2" Hitch # EQ90-02-4700

- Max 10" Rise, 6" Drop: Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Shank - 2-1/2" Hitch # EQ90-02-4900

- Max 13" Rise, 9" Drop: Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Shank - 2-1/2" Hitch # EQ94FR

Hey Duelly, how did the new 2.5-inch shank work out with your Reese weight distribution setup? Did the hole alignment match up the way you needed? Your update could make it easier for others upgrading from a 2-inch shank.
