Parts Needed to Add Electric Brakes to ShoreLand'r Boat Trailer

Question:

Good afternoon, I have a shorlandr rated for 4250lbs with 15 tires. VIN is 1MEH2V12YA103554. Is there any way that I can get a couple of options for me to convert this to electric brakes? It currently has surge brakes. Thank you,

Hey Ryan! We don't have a way to identify your axle using the VIN so you will have to check and see what axle you have before we can find the right parts. I would start by checking the axle tag. It may have the capacity listed or, at least a serial number the axle manufacturer could use to identify it.

If not, you will need to check and see what bearings you have. The part numbers may be stamped in the side or you can measure the inner diameter with a digital caliper # PTW80157. If you can add that information in the comments below I can find the right brakes and hub/drum assembly.

Even if you pull out a standard 15% tongue weight from your 4,250 lb rating a 3,500 lb axle wouldn't be high enough. It may be a 3,750 that shares the same bearing combination as a 3,500 or it could be something like a 4,400 lb axle so it is hard to even take a guess. In addition to the new brakes and hubs you will need the following:

-Wiring Kit for Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuators # HS381-9000 (Upgrades you to a 7-way)

-Hopkins Engager Trailer Breakaway Kit # 20099

-10 Gauge Primary Wire # 10-1-1 (Additional wire to run to brake assemblies)

-Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED52VR (Custom wiring harness may be available depending on vehicle)

You can also add a new coupler like # CT-5003-Z for a 3" wide tongue or you can drill and run some bolts through to lock out your existing coupler.

Robin, Thank you. Is there a way to see my previous orders that I have placed through etrailer? I did replace bearings on my trailer maybe a two years ago in which I ordered through etrailer. Thank you,

@Ryan I am able to see your orders but there aren't any bearings in there. The only thing we show is the 10-10 grease seal # RG06-090. This still won't be enough information to find the axle capacity/identify the bearings.

@Ruan with those bearings and bolt pattern you can use the parts mentioned above along with one of the following kits: -Hydrastar Disc Brake Kit w/ Actuator for Single Axle Trailers # HYD94VR -Hydrastar Disc Brake Kit w/ Actuator for Tandem Axle Trailers # HYD44VR I'm not sure if you have a single axle or tandem axle setup so you can choose based on your trailer configuration. These will match your current spindle and bolt pattern.
