Recommended Flat Towing Components For A 2019 Ford F-250 Towed By A 2022 Thor Aria 3401

Updated 01/22/2025 | Published 12/30/2024

Question:

I have a 2022 Thor aria 3401 with 10K tow capacity and 10K hitch. We have the Cummins 360hp. I’d like to flat tow my 2019 Ford F250. I know I need to check on the calculations but I’d Like to know what set up I’ll need. Id Like to have better than average gear like tow bar Roadmaster night hawk. I’d like easiest brake and light system. Can you advise me what I need? Thanks.

Hey Kent,

The Roadmaster Nighthawk All-Terrain Tow Bar w/ LED Lights # RM-676 is a great tow bar to start off your component list with. It's going to include safety cables, a 7-wire to 6-wire adapter cable, and s 6-pole socket. You'll need the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # RM-524452-5 to complete the physical connection between the motorhome and F-250.

For your lighting you'll need the Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit # RM-152. This comes with diodes that will splice into your factory tail light wiring and the 6-pole socket included with the Nighthawk. The other option is bulb and socket, which requires drilling large holes in the tail lights so I don't recommend going with them.

Your 2022 Thor Aria 3401 should have hydraulic brakes so you'll need the Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo # SM99251 for your supplemental braking system. This will be a permanent install that will be ready to go each time you need to tow so you aren't having to go through an even longer setup process. The installation is a bit more involved but you'll thank yourself later when you aren't fighting a portable system that doesn't want to sit right in front of the driver's seat or looking for a place to store it.

If you don't want to do the installation yourself then I recommend checking out the link to our installer locator below.

Kevin I found a 2009 jeep wrangler 4 door that already had been flat towed but is missing some gear. I have photos I can send of it helps but Appears it has a roadmaster system. I see two connectors under bumper that appear to be pin type connectors to the hitch. It has breakaway that has a roadmaster part number 8600. I see an air brake ? Air connection in front of jeep at bumper and inside at drivers side inside. I also see a wiring connection in bumper of jeep. What I need to know is what parts I need. I am missing the actual braking unit for inside the jeep. The actual tow bar and what I need to get brakes and wiring hooked up on my motorhome which, as a reminder, 2022 Thor aria 3401 diesel. I know I have hit hitch on the Thor and a wiring connection. I am not sure I have an air hose connection for the brakes or any light at steering area (watched videos) for what I believe is braking system. So the Thor has never been set up for towing other than what is standard from Thor. Really appreciate your help. Tell me what I need to order cause it sounds like I need to piece meal the parts now. Thanks.

@KentL It sounds like it has a Roadmaster BrakeMaster # RM-9160-900002. This system is designed for air brakes and air-over-hydraulic brakes. The listing for your motorhome states that it has hydraulic brakes so this system wouldn't be compatible. This site I use to see this info has been wrong before so I would need you to confirm what type of brakes your motorhome has. If it does end up being compatible then I'll try to get a parts breakdown diagram and list from Roadmaster so you know exactly what to start looking for.

@KevinC Appreciate the late after hours response. How would I check the RV brake system? I know it’s got air ride and I quite sure air brakes. Thanks.

@KentL You would have an air pressure gauge on the dash if you had air brakes. Air ride is a common term for air springs being integrated into the suspension and wouldn't be an indicator of your brake type.
