Replacement Axle for 2007 Fleetwood Bayside Camper

Updated 11/18/2025 | Published 12/07/2024

Question:

I have a 2007 Fleetwood Bayside pop up camper and am considering upgrading the 3,500 lb axle to a 5,200 lb axle. Which axle would be the best fit and which components are critical to be replaced along side it, e.g. leaf springs, electric brake drums, etc.?

Hi Jeremy; to replace your axle you will need to know the hub face measurement (length) of your current axle. See the video below which explains how to measure. You will also need to match your spring center measurement which may involve cutting off and welding on new spring seats.

The leaf springs don't really need to change since a higher capacity axle doesn't increase the capacity of the trailer. You will need new U-bolts, hubs, brakes, wheels, and possibly tires as well unless you already have a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern. It is typically best to stick with the same axle capacity unless it is obsolete.

Hey Jeremy, what did you end up deciding for the axle on your Fleetwood Bayside? Once you had the hub face and spring center measurements, did you stick with the 3,500‑lb axle or go for the upgrade? Your update could make it easier for others thinking about the same change.

@RobinH I decided to keep the 3,500-lb axle. Your answer helped me realize that the axle, springs, and probably even the frame-itself are all likely rated for 3,500-lbs. I didn't want to risk damaging the frame if it wasn't built to carry more than it was built for. Probably best to buy a beefier trailer if I want to carry more cargo.

@JeremyC definitely better to get a trailer that can handle more weight. A lot of people don't realize you can upgrade the suspension all you want but the frame will still limit you, good choice to stick with the same axle.
