Question:

I need tire chains for both a 2017 and 2022 Subaru Outback with 225/65/R17 tires. I am considering the following: 1. Pewag PWRS79 2.Titan TC343DC 3. Titan TC1555 4. Konig TH2004205105 5. Pewag PWRSV79 and Pewag PWSXV580. Which chains would fit the limited clearance best? Which are the easiest to put on and take off? Which are the most durable? Do you have any overall recommendation?

Hi Roger; all of these are Class S compatible so while clearance varies slightly it will be comparable between the ones you're looking at. If you're looking for something that will work in an emergency, and you are getting these because they're required, the Titan Chain Cable Tire Chain # TC343DC is the best choice.

These are actually cables which is why the cost is so low. Most people get cable because they have to have them but really don't intend on using them. If you plan to use them and want something that will have solid performance we can go ahead and rule these out.

The # PWRS79 and # PWRSV79 are going to be the most durable with their high-quality titanium alloy steel construction. Ease of installation is close to the same between all of the options so I would call that a wash. If I had to choose between all of them it would be the pewag Servo RS Tire Chains # PWRS79. These are easy to install, have the titanium alloy construction, and will have a slightly better level of clearance over the # PWRSV79 which has thicker links.

Make sure to consult your owner's manual and follow all instructions for tire chain use. I attached an installation video below for your reference.

Hey Roger, how did the pewag Servo RS chains work out on your Outbacks? They sounded like a solid pick for durability and clearance. Sharing how they performed could help others choosing between cables and chains for similar setups.
