Tire Chain Recommendation for 2025 Subaru Forester 235/50-19

Updated 08/18/2025 | Published 01/14/2025

Question:

I own a 2025 Subaru Forester, Touring edition, with 235/50R19 tires. The Touring edition of the 2025 Forester appears unique among the 2025 Foresters in respect to the clearance the tires have to the body. The Owner’s Manual for the vehicle states: “Tire chains cannot be used on your vehicle because of the lack of clearance between the tires and vehicle body. When tire chains cannot be used, use of another type of traction device such as spring chains may be acceptable if use on your vehicle is recommended by the device manufacturer.” Can you recommend an appropriate traction product *confirmed* to fit a 2025, Touring Edition? Thanks!

Hey Trent, I have a couple options for your 2025 Subaru Forester with tire size 235/50-19. First we do have tire cables like your manual mentions can be used with the part # PW1042. These will work and get you around but they are generally a one-time-use type solution which the price reflects that.

Now if you want something that would provide better traction and will last a really long time the best solution is the Konig K-Summit Chains part # TH02230K66. These do not wrap around the inner sidewall of the tire at all so they actually have the best clearance, they install super easy, will last a very long time, and also won't potentially scratch your wheels.

Hi Jameson, like others we have regulations in our state that enforce the use of diamond chains for all vehicles within resorts. It concerns me that Subaru in their manuals is advising that chains should not be used on 19 inch rims. Have you been able to check the chain installation on the Forester and its clearances to confirm these are suitable and acceptable.

@ErosC In situations like this we have to default to the manufacturer of the vehicle and what they recommend. I would recommend contacting a dealer in the area with those restrictions and ask what they advise as they will have a solution. You might show them the K-Summits mentioned above too as that's normally what they'll give green light on.
