Troubleshooting Exhaust Hangers Not Lining Back up After Trailer Hitch Installation

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/08/2024

Question:

The install went with only one hitch, ha ha... I solved the U bolt problem simply by cutting off about 10mm of bolt on each leg. Went on just fine with plenty of threads exposed after torquing. The problem I have is that the muffler hits the hitch and I cannot get it into position to place the hangers. Its more than an inch on the port rear hanger. What to do?

Hey John, glad to hear your Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13314 installation has been somewhat of a success, although I am sad to hear about what you're getting hung up on - *cue drums.

For real though, muffler hangers can be annoying to get back into place, but according to the instructions you might need to modify them some to get everything to fit back into place.

I installed a hitch on my Town and Country last year and I ran into a similar problem, but in my case the muffler was sitting right against the hitch so we got a really bad rattling sound when we started the vehicle. I was able to remedy the situation by bending one or two of the muffler hangers just enough that the muffler didn't make contact with the hitch anymore, and I'm thinking you'll need to do something similar in your situation.

Hey John, how did things turn out after you adjusted the muffler hangers around your Curt hitch? It’d be great to know if that tweak gave you enough clearance. Your update could make it easier for the next person running into the same issue.
