Recommended Flat Towing Components For A 2021 Ford F-150 Platinum

Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 10/28/2024

Question:

I bought this Ford F150 with the tow part on the front which is a Roadmaster Part. 524467-5. So I am thinking that I need all the rest of the parts to tow my truck a 2021 F150 Platinum Edition behind my Motor home. What are they and what do you recommend? Thanks Curtis

Hey Curtis,

If you already have a baseplate installed then there's a good chance you might also have some other flat towing components still installed on your F-150. Starting with the baseplate, did they leave you the removable arms that pop into the baseplate? If not you'll need to fill out the # RM-ARMS form attached below and send it into Roadmaster to get some replacements.

From there you'll need a compatible tow bar like the etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar for Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plates # e74ZR. This tow bar comes with safety cables bracketed to the arms so you won't have to purchase them separately or worry about them dragging on the ground. The head/shank also has a built in tilt/rise/drop feature to help keep the tow bar level between the motorhome and F-150.

Next you'll need a light kit like the Roadmaster Smart Diode Wiring Kit for Variable Voltage LED Tail Lights # RM38FR or # RM26FR for incandescent tail lights. This would splice into your F-150's tail light wiring to transfer the motorhome's traffic signals to the tail lights. I would check to see if you already have something like this in place. You'll likely see the 6-pole socket # RM-910030-7 up front hidden in the front fascia/grille if you already have it.

Next you'll need a compatible supplemental braking system for your motorhome's brake type. If you have hydraulic brakes you'll want the Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo # SM99251. If your motorhome has air brakes you'll need the Demco Air Force One # SM99243 instead.

You'll likely also need a Brake-Lite Relay Kit # RM-88400 to prevent the brake signal from overriding your turn signal. If you go with magnetic lights instead of splice-ins like I recommended above this won't be needed.

Since your F-150's battery will drain while you tow I recommend installing a charge line # RM-156-25 to avoid having to stop every few of hours to run the F-150's engine and recharge the battery with the alternator. If your motorhome doesn't have a charge line ran to the 7-way then you'll also need the # RM-156-75.

Hey Curtis, how did things go getting your F-150 set up for flat towing behind your motorhome? Were the baseplate arms and wiring already in place, or did you end up adding the new tow bar and braking system? Your update could make it easier for the next person setting up a similar truck.
