Replacement Wheel/Tire for 2019 Scamp with Higher Weight Capacity

Published 10/09/2024

Question:

Hi, I have a 2019 Scamp trailer with 13 inch wheels and have ordered tires from you previously. I just had a flat on a really bumpy highway with temperature 93 degrees outside. I heard my tire pop. After AAA changed the tire I took my trailer to a truck scale and when subtracting tow vehicle weight from total weight it was 3300 lbs and the tires on there were rated at 3050 lbs. I know some of the weight is on the tongue but thats too close for comfort. I immediately moved a lot of stuff to my tow vehicle but it's still too close for comfort with a trailer with one axel. I wonder what you would recommend as the highest weight rated tires for my trailer. Thanks

Hey Eileen, I looked through your order notes and it looks like you got from us the part # AM31985 which is the size 175/80-13 on a 5 lug wheel. In that size we have a Load Range D with the part # AM3S333 which has a weight capacity of 1,725 lb per wheel/tire so it would get you more capacity than you'd need.

It looks like the one I got before is rated for 1650, which is more that 1610 of the one you just recommended? Maybe I misread the weight rating on my current tires. I'll go re-check

@Eileen I'm sorry my math was wrong. I don't know why I thought the combined capacity would be higher. To go higher you'd actually want the part # AM3S333 which has a 1,725 lb capacity per wheel/tire.

@JamesonC I notice the one you just recommended is a bias tire, not radial. I have heard that radial tires are most recommended for trailers. Can you speak to this? thanks.

@Eileen Yeah radial tires are generally preferred over bias ply and we do have a premounted wheel and tire that is a radial but it is on a more expensive aluminum wheel with the part # KE33JR. Or if you wanted to reuse your current wheels you could go with just the tire part # AM10208.
