How to Still Have Reverse Camera with Truck Camper in Bed of 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500

Updated 01/05/2026 | Published 09/24/2024

Question:

I have a 2016 Silverado 1500 with a working, factory back up camera mounted in the tailgate. Monitor is the factory radio. When Im hauling my truck camper, the tailgate is removed. Do you have a back up camera that would mount on the license plate, but still use the factory connector, wiring and monitor?

Hey JimR, thanks for reaching out!

The closest thing we have to what you're needing is the BringIt SwitchBack SOLO Down Tailgate Camera # BR52ZR which installs on the top side of your tailgate so you get a reverse camera when your tailgate is down. I know you said you remove the tailgate when you're hauling your truck camper, but I'm wondering if you can get by with the tailgate in the lowered position since you referenced getting a license plate-style camera.

It looks like there are some on the market that do install in the same location as your license plate, but I don't have any experience with those because we don't carry them - so I unfortunately don't have any insight into a recommendation for you.

Hey JimR, were you able to find a camera setup that worked with your Silverado’s factory wiring and monitor? Knowing what solution you landed on could really help others trying to keep their backup view when the tailgate is off.
