Recommended Replacement Lower Assembly for the Thule T2 Pro XTR

Updated 01/27/2026 | Published 08/21/2024

Question:

Can the TH79JV be used as a replacement for the plastic portion of the locking knob on the Thule T2 pro XTR? The one that is used to loosen/tighten the hitch wedge specifically. Mine broke and it seems the only other option Thule offers is to buy the entire spline/stinger assembly for hundreds of dollars. I cant lock my hitch to the car without this. Thanks!

Chris, unfortunately the Replacement Locking Knob for Thule Bike Racks # TH79JV is not going to work with your Thule T2 Pro XTR Bike Rack for 2 Bikes # TH83JV.

I did check with Thule, and they only offer the entire Replacement Lower Assembly and 2" Stinger for Thule T2 Pro XTR 2-Bike Rack # TH37MY to replace that knob, it is not offered separately.

Hey Chris, were you able to find a replacement that worked for your Thule T2 Pro XTR bike rack? Knowing what solution you ended up using could help others facing the same broken knob issue.

@AndrewN yes I ended up buying the Thule 528001 part off of Amazon.ca It came with the knob itself and I bought a one-key lock cylinder to install in it. It does the job despite Thule support telling me it wouldn’t work. Whether there is some difference between it and the original I’m not sure, I just wasn’t willing to accept the whole rack was useless without trying. Worked all summer for me! I’ll just note that the part I can’t seem to find on Amazon any longer, it says it’s unavailable.

@Chris That's great news! I'm glad you found a solution even though Thule told us (and you) that there wasn't a replacement option lol.
