Replacement Recommendation for a Carlisle 175/80R13 Tire and Silver Mod Wheel

Updated 08/15/2024 | Published 08/14/2024

Question:

It appears the mfg of our trailer says the original size for the pilot hole is 2.99. They thought this wheel pilot hole size of 2.99 could work. Is there anyway to know for certain? Could the pilot hole measurement be double checked with digital caliper? Also it appears the 10 holes going around the center of rim on mine are 1.5 inches in diameter? Not critical but could that measurement be checked as well? The boat and trailer are new to us so I havent had a wheel off to check the pilot hole size yet. Lastly we have Carlisle St175/80R13 RADIAL Trail tires. Do you have or can you get them as well? On your tire and wheel combos are the tires balanced? Thanks

Hey Dave, thanks for reaching out!

If your trailer manufacturer says that the original pilot hole diameter is 2.99" then yes, the Vesper Steel Modular Trailer Wheel # TA53RR will fit just fine. If you don't believe the specs your trailer manufacturer has listed out then the only way to check what you have is to measure the pilot hole on your current wheels.

We don't carry the Carlisle brand name, but we have the Provider ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 13" Vesper Silver Mod Wheel # TA73RR which is on the exact same wheel you were looking at. I really like this tire because you get an 81 mph speed rating and the tire is backed the Platinum Plus warranty which lasts for 2 years and comes with complimentary roadside assistance.

The 2.99" pilot hole has already been measured not only by Taskmaster, but also Jeff (see attached videos) who has extensive tire and wheel knowledge so any measurements he's taken will be better than mine. The holes around the rim are a standard size so if you have a modular style wheel with 10 holes this will match it.

The tire and wheel combos we carry aren't balanced, but they don't have to be since they're for a trailer. If you want to have a tire shop balance them once you receive them though there wont be any harm in that.

Jon The trailer mfg said the original Center Bore was 3.19. I pulled a tire this morning and measured it and that 3.19 doe center bore on the rim was verified. While doing so I also measured the hub diameter with a digital caliper and it measured 2.475". The mfg had also said they thought the 2.99 CB would work but to verify fit. So there is only ,2" difference between the 2.99 CB and the 3.19" CB rim I have. If you subtract the hub diameter of 2.475 measurement from the 2.99 measurement of the Vesper rim you get approximately 1/2" difference and therefore you would still have 1/4" clearance all the way around between the rim CB of 2.99 and the hub measurement of 2.475" Hopefully after reviewing this updated info you would agree there shouldn't be an issue with the fit of the Vesper Rim as a result of any difference between the 3.19 mfg CB and the 2.99 of the Vesper rim. The MFG confirmed a 5 on 4.5 pattern and I measured and confirmed this too. As to the Carlisle tire... The reason I was after the same thing is wanting to be sure there wasn't any conflict in the specs on whats on the trailer now so there wouldn't be any wear or handling issues if I got another tire and had to use it temporarily if there was a flat, that wasn't exactly the same thing. These tires are load C but I haven't confirmed with Carlisle what the speed rating is. I expect if the provider is load C it is the same speed rating too. I am curious as to the number of ply's on the provider tire etc. I'll use the link to see what specs are available. It appears this Vesper rim is a lighter shade of silver as opposed to dark shade on some other brands I've seen online.

@Dave Yes, the 2.99 will work if your hub diameter is 2.475". The Provider has a 16 ply rating and will be okay as a spare, but if you're wanting something to use full time you want to make sure the tires match, whether you're replacing everything with the Provider or getting another Carlisle. This will ensure the best tracking and tire performance as well as even wear like you mentioned.

Jon Just to reconfirm: The wheel part number that is used with the Provider tire combo is the TA53RR Vesper modular wheel. Is that correct? Thanks!
