Is 10" - 12" Lift for a Boat Trailer Jack Normal

Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 08/13/2024

Question:

Can you tell me how to determine which amount of lift such as 10inch or 12inch is best on a boat trailer? Im not sure how to tel which amount of lift/travel height is required for my trailer situation. I have a swing out of the way in-line with the tongue of our boat trailer model presently. Out trailer mfg said we should get a 1200lb. lift capacity. This might work? Thanks

Hey Dave, thanks for reaching out!

The 1.2K Fulton Boat Trailer Jack w/ Wheel # FTJ12000101 is a solid choice for a boat trailer jack, and it will lift the tongue of your boat about 10" off of the ground. If you level out your trailer now and you measure from the ground to the bottom of your coupler this will tell you how much lift you need in order to level your trailer - be sure to choose a jack that lifts a little more than that so you can get over the hitch ball on your vehicle.

The 10" - 12" lift range is pretty normal for a boat trailer but it's still worth checking the height needed to couple your trailer just to make sure life will be easier with the product.

Hey Dave, how did things go with measuring the height from the ground to your coupler to find the right lift for your trailer jack? Knowing what worked for you could help others trying to match their trailer height too.

That part was fine but trying to find the best coupler was more challenging due to our needing 1 1/4" ball mount base versus 2" since our hitch was only 1 1/4"

@Dave I can understand that, it is not as common as the 2". Were you able to find something that works for you?
