Can A Bad Damper Cause Surge Brakes To Be Clunky?

Updated 08/13/2024 | Published 08/09/2024

Question:

Hi, I have a 2008 Mastercraft boat trailer. Its a Reliable model ACT-7.5K. My surge brakes clunk on takeoff, unless I ease into it. Im wondering if its the damper shock absorber. Do you have one that would work ? Thanks, Chris

Hello Chris. It is possible that a bad damper could cause clunky braking, and if yours is no good you will definitely want to replace it. The Replacement Damper part # DX76FR is for the Dexter model 20 actuators, so please do confirm this is what you have. If you have a different model of actuator just let me know and I am happy to look into it and make a recommendation.

Hi Jesse, thanks for the reply. I don't know what damper is in there, unless I take it apart. How did you come up with #DX76FR as a replacement ? I'm trying to find the right brake pads & calipers to replace first to see if that helps as well. Thanks, Chris

@ChrisL The Replacement Damper # DX76FR is the only one we currently carry which is why I mentioned it as an example. I did find a service manual online for the Reliable ACT-7.5K actuator and I can tell you that the # DX76FR damper will NOT work with this model. The Reliable ACT-7.5K is no longer made so at this point I have to recommend replacing the entire actuator. There are no replacement parts available unless you can find them used or secondhand. As far as the Brake pads and calipers, they are going to be brand specific to the rotors. You cannot mix and match brands as this often causes alignment issues. There should be some markings on the caliper that we can use to identify the brand. Replacements may be available depending on what you have. Otherwise, you will be looking at a whole brake kit with new hubs, rotors, calipers, brackets and brake pads.

@JesseM Wow, what a pain this is. $1200 Canadian for new actuator & probably same amount for all the brake parts. Might as well leave it without brakes. Thanks for looking into it, much appreciated.

@ChrisL Oh I hear you, Chris. Don't hesitate to reach out if there is anything else you need. If you do want to look into getting a new actuator and disc brake kit I can help.
