Removal And Replacement Of Damper Shocks In A Dico/Titan Model 20 Surge Brake Actuator

Updated 05/06/2026 | Published 06/25/2024

Question:

Hi. I purchased Damper shocks for a Dico/Titan model 20 surge brake actuator. I am having difficulties removing one bolt holding the back part of the shock. Two came out easily but one seams to hit solid metal when tapping with hammer. Is there a trick to getting the bolt out. Is there a slot in the sleeves. Please help. No information on how to replace these shocks. I have full diagram of unit. No help there. Thanks.

Hey Will,

The damper shocks should be held in place by two 5/8" bolts with either castle nuts or pins to lock them in place. To get these you'll likely need to remove the inner sleeve of the actuator. If you want to send me some pictures I can also take a look as well.

Hey Will, how did things go after you removed the inner sleeve on your Model 20 actuator? Your update could make it easier for others trying to replace the same damper shocks.

I have that problem. Have to cut sleeve and bolt. Bad design. This solid bolt should be like the other two on top with grease fittings. It’s frozen because it’s rusted solid. The sleeve below is similar to the top two with holes for greasing. I suggest you design the lower damper bolt setup similar to the top two. For the next time it will slide out. Don’t beat on the bolt; you can bend the frame. Cut it out with saw zaw with a good metal blade.
