Troubleshooting Grease Seal Leaking on 3,500 lb Axle

Question:

I have a 2018 nucamp tab 400 with 3500 dexter axle, replaced drum and hub with kit k08-247-94 on both sides of trailer, on one side the axle seal keeps leaking some grease into brake area. Have replaced seal 2 times with same result after about 4 000 miles.Have inspected for burrs and other flaws and have installed seal with seal installer tool. The other side is perfectly clean. Need to get the seal part number and do you think the problem is? Thank you in advance.

Thanks for reaching out, Ron!

To replace the grease seal on your Dexter Trailer Hub & Drum Assembly # 84546UC3-EZ (Dexter part K08-247-94) you can either get part # 58846 for a single seal or part # RG06-050 for a set of seals.

If you've inspected the hub for burrs or anything that could damage the seal then you might want to check the spindle as well to make sure nothing on that part of your setup is causing the problem.

Should all of that look okay then I recommend taking your setup to a shop or an experienced friend to get an extra set of eyes on it as well. I could recommend just replacing the hub and drum assembly, but if that isn't the problem then you'll be right back at square one. I think it would be best to double check your hub and drum along with the spindle and then have someone else look at it too prior to replacing the hub/drum.

Thanks for your thoughts, sometimes a second set of eyes spots something you don't see. I was a JD service mgr for 30 plus years, so I think the seal is going in correctly.I will be diligent checking all areas the seal rides on for sure.
