Can The Curt 2-Bike Platform Rack Hold A 60lb E-Bike And 45lb Mountain Bike

Updated 07/25/2024 | Published 07/24/2024

Question:

Hello. Can you tell me if your Curt C18085 bike rack will accommodate a 60 lb. step through e-bike and a 25 lb. mountain bike? Your specs say it will hold two 45 pound bikes. My issue is that, plus the fact that the bike does not really have a top tube, because it’s a step through design, with a very low threshold, like the old beach cruisers. Also, what does class one, two or three mean? Thank you.

Hi Lynne,

The Curt 2 Bike Platform Rack # C18085 would not be able to handle the weight of your 60lb e-bike. If you don't have fenders then you could switch to a wheel mount design. If you do have fenders then you'll just need to pick up a bar adapter # HRBA-PRO since you have a step-thru frame. Hitch classes will tell you the receiver tube opening size and typical capacity range. When it comes to certain bike racks, especially ones hauling heavy e-bikes, certain class requirements are there to ensure the bike rack is properly supported.

Since you have a 2009 Toyota Prius listed as your vehicle that means you could only have a class I or class II hitch. In order to haul an e-bike you'll need to have a class II hitch with a 2" receiver tube opening like the EcoHitch # 306-X7196. This would allow you to use a bike rack like the Saris Freedom Bike Rack for 2 Fat Bikes # SA4412B-FB (along with the bar adapter # HRBA-PRO) or a wheel mount rack like the RockyMounts MonoRail Solo Bike Rack # RKY10007-05. Both racks have a 60lb per bike capacity.
