Hidden Cross Tube for a Clean, Factory Look

The EcoHitch Hidden trailer hitch is designed to be as inconspicuous as possible. The hitch's cross tube bolts onto your vehicle's frame, behind your rear bumper. No drilling or welding is required. Once the hitch is installed, only the receiver will be visible beneath your bumper. This means that your vehicle can maintain its stylish, from-the-factory look, and you won't have to do any major modifications to its body or frame.

Eco-Friendly Material

With a combination of aerospace-grade aluminum, steel, and stainless steel, each EcoHitch is made of a strong metal alloy that will withstand the test of time. The lightweight alloy is composed of recycled materials. Traditional steel hitch manufacturing can use coal or oil, which can contribute to harmful gas emissions. The EcoHitch's recycled materials limit the carbon footprint during manufacturing, so you get a sturdy trailer hitch while also helping the environment.

Rigorous Strength Testing Ensures Durability

This EcoHitch trailer hitch is tested for durability and sturdiness. Using Finite Elemental Analysis (FEA), individual points of stress on the hitch can be detected and remedied. Designers can accurately test the hitch to ensure that it will meet or exceed SAE J684 standards. The EcoHitch Hidden trailer hitch is carefully researched and strength tested for a durable, high-quality hitch that can resist damage while on the road.

In terms of difficulty, it's a very tight fit where the spare tire wheel well butts up against the end of the hitch. I had the rear tires up on ramps and used a jack to hold the hitch in place. Be aware of the limitations of cars with suspensions that are 15-20 years old as well. I was able to carry a 250cc dualsport 400 miles home, but I would limit yourself to much lighter dirt bikes if you plan to use a carrier. To be clear the carrier was my choice, and the hitch held up well. All in all, it worked well and appears to be one of the few options if you want a class II hitch.

This hitch installed pretty easily, and essentially no vehicle modifications were needed. When installed, it sits flush with the bumper and you can only see the square hole. The whole unit tucks behind the bumper, which looks way nicer. I also had a couple questions regarding a locking hitch pin and customer service was very helpful. Thanks all for the great service and product!

Terrible packaging
Didn’t receive any
instructions how to install!

by:

Works great. I love that it is a 2 inch hitch on a small car. Much easier to find accessories and racks that work. The car handles a small harbor freight trailer with ease.

by:

Outstanding customer service & Product! etrailer does a great job of communicating throughout the process. I was able to track the progress from build to shipping easily online. My hitch shipped and arrived exactly when they said it would. Great online installations videos for my specific make/model!

by:

Had this professionally installed, went on with no problems and no need to cut/modify any part of the car, and has been operating with no problems ever since. Was told it has a “.5” weight rating so the 300-lb max tongue weight is good to twice that (e.g. if you hit a dip or pothole). Am using a 4-bike North Shore Rack with no issues, although overall loading of the poor little Prius’s suspension has to be watched.

by:

The hitch is fantastic but many people may find it easiest to take it to someone with the proper tools. If you are frustrated easily please take it to a shop. I live in the northeast and had a little bit of difficulty getting the old bolts out. Yay salt. I am mechanically inclined and also have proper tools. Installation a success. I purchased a motorcycle carrier from [online] which pairs perfectly with this 300 pound tongue weight receiver. no regerts.

does not fit at all, i will have to bend several pieces of metal and push my muffler down to make it fit. Don't believe them when they say it will fit your car, they said it would fit my 2008 prius and lied.

Hey Edward. I am curious what metal pieces you needed to bend. Can you get me some photos so I can look into this more.

Installation was straightforward and the receiver is easy to get to but doesn't stick out at all. Great all around, thanks!

2012 Toyota Prius

I buy from no one else. My first hitch assembly was for my old 2008 Prius. I got into ATVs during that time and I only had that Prius, and it worked flawlessly. I, however, put that poor car through hell, lol, and eventually the engine gave up on me, so I purchased a 2012 Lexus RX450h AWD, to handle my newly acquired outdoor hobby. I got a hitch assemble again from etrailer for sais Lexus, and it has worked flawlessly as well. Thank you etrailer for making affordable and durable hitches and wire hardnesses.

by:

The hitch was perfect. It is very high quality and heavy duty. I had a local mechnic install it for me and it fits and lines up with the can and bumper much mor cleanly than I was even hoping. Since purchsaing this hitch I have purchased another that was just as good. Easy to orer on line and exceeded expecations.

by:

I really love that it doesn't subtract from the ground clearance. It may look like it does when you look from above, but when you look at if from ground level, it doesn't come close to extending beyond what the muffler does.

Fantastic! This hitch is hardly noticeable from behind and it doesn’t subtract from the clearance. I use it mainly to hook up my bike rack, but the Prius can tow a small trailer.

Doesn’t come close not even the holes I have to beat and bend some of my trunk and bumper supports to get it to go up and I’m hoping that it will reach the frame I don’t even want to try to deal with returning

I will have our customer service team reach out to you. It sounds like the hitch arrived flexed which means that the side brackets were out of alignment. This can happen while in transit to our facility or to you. I do have an FAQ that provides suggestions on how to correct the flex for installation.

by:

Great product, step by step instructions, no trouble to install. Took a while to get it. I'm assuming it was like everything else, hard to get material. Not holding that against them. Would buy again.

Appears sturdy and has been on multiple trips with my ebikes bike rack. I had a auto service business install the item on my prius rather than do it alone.

by:
2008 Toyota Prius

I was able to follow the instructions and self install. YES it did require every step to be followed correctly. YES it did require some "tugging" of the bottom bumper fascia to slip up into place. A 5 gallon bucket came in handy to support it while getting it into place. Excellent for a Prius for light towing or in my case ... a bicycle rack!

This hitch was exactly what I ordered. It came fast. The instructions were easy to follow. Installation was quick and painless.

  • How To Carry 70 Lb E-Bike on 2005 Toyota Prius with 1-1/4" Hitch
I do have option for you but this is too much weight for that size hitch on this vehicle. Therefore you can either reduce the weight of the bike to 66 lbs by removing the battery so you can use the Yakima OnRamp Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes part # Y96FR or you will be forced to change out the hitch to a 2", the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 306-X7196. The more cost effective route is the OnRamp but the better long term route is the EcoHitch.

  • Complete Towing Setup For A 2004 Toyota Prius
Yes, the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver # 306-X7196 that you mentioned will fit a 2004-2009 Toyota Prius. This trailer hitch has a 2" receiver opening, a maximum gross trailer weight capacity of 2,000-lbs, a maximum tongue weight of 300-lbs, and is made proudly in the United States. Additionally, you are going to need a wiring harness. I recommend checking out the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # HM11141854. • Weight of EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch For 2008 Toyota Prius
The EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver # 306-X7196 that fits your 2008 Toyota Prius weighs 30 lbs. This is a superb option for a hitch because this is the only hitch for your Prius which has a 2 inch receiver, and it's tongue weight capacity of 300 lbs is the highest available for your Prius.. This is really important because when using it for accessories such as bike racks and cargo carriers, a 2 inch receiver is going to have a much wider range of higher-quality options to choose...

  • Installation if EcoHitch 306-X7196 on 2008 Toyota Prius
I don't have any recommended installers, but any trusted mechanic should be able to complete the installation for you without too much difficulty. If you're moderately handy, you might even be able to complete the install yourself, as the installation isn't too complicated. EcoHitch installs usually require removing the bumper fascia and sometimes the bumper beam itself, but this installation is much more simple. The most difficult portion of the EcoHitch # 306-X7196 installation is temporarily...

  • Installation Troubleshooting for Squeaking EcoHitch on 2005 Toyota Prius
The EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - 2" # 306-X7196 should be torqued to 40 ft lbs. The hitch receiver itself normally doesn't squeak, and lubricating the hardware will not help. Normally you would do the opposite and add lock-tite thread locker like # LT37420. • Comparing Trailer Hitch Options for Carrying 2 Bike Rack on a 2006 Toyota Prius
Betweeen the Curt # C11468 and Draw-Tite # 24808 for your 2006 Toyota Prius, I recommend the Curt simply because we have found that they tend to have better welds and a thicker powder coat than other options on the market. All of this translates into a more durable hitch that you can rely on. While you can use an adapter like the Brophy # HTAD to carry a bike rack with a 2" shank, we typically advise against this for a few reasons. First of all it's more connection points so there are...

  • Will The EcoHitch 306-X7196 Fit A 2004 To 2009 Toyota Prius?
The EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch # 306-X7196 is designed to fit the 2004 to 2009 Toyota Prius. This is rated to 2,000 pounds towing and 300 pounds of tongue weight, but I highly recommend checking your owner's manual for your Prius' max capacities. This hitch will most likely be rated higher than your vehicle and you should always load the hitch to the lowest rated component, lest there be a failure.

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes on a 2004 Toyota Prius
For a trailer hitch to use with an e-bike rack I recommend the EcoHitch # 306-X7196 for your 2004 Toyota Prius. This is a 2" trailer hitch receiver with a 300 lb tongue weight capacity, which opens up a LOT more options to choose from when it comes to a bike rack. For a bike rack that has a high enough capacity to hold 2 E-bikes weighing up to 60 pounds each you can use the Saris SuperClamp EX # SA4025F, Kuat NV 2.0, # NV22G, or the Thule EasyFold # TH903202. • Why Isn't There a Cutout In the EcoHitch for a 2005 Toyota Prius for Exhaust
The EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 306-X7196 is a great option for a 2005 Toyota Prius. It will sit up above the exhaust so there isn't a need for a cutout in the cross tube like the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 24808. If you look closely, the brackets are much shorter on the EcoHitch as well as the receiver tube being under the crosstube as opposed to the Draw-Tit which has much longer brackets and the receiver tube is attached to the crosstube.

  • EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver Class Rating For a 2008 Toyota Prius
The EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver # 306-X7196 for your 2008 Toyota Prius doesn't use a traditional class rating system like other receivers since it does use a 2" receiver that does not carry the minimum weight capacities that would give it a class III rating. The best way to describe the receiver is a 2" receiver with a class II weight rating. The maximum allowed tongue weight of the receiver is 300lbs and you will want to verify with your Toyota dealer as to the maximum weight...

  • Why Is Trailer Hitch Rated for More Weight Than Vehicle
It's a good question and one we get from time to time. The fact is that trailer hitches are rated independently of the vehicle, which just means that something like the EcoHitch Hidden Hitch # 306-X7196 that you referenced has a 300 pound tongue weight capacity for the hitch itself. As with any aftermarket component, you'll always still be limited by the setup's weakest component, which in this case would certainly be the Prius it's installed on. This is the only 2" available for your vehicle. It has a 300 lbs maximum tongue weight so plenty of capacity for your bike rack.
