Trailer Hitch Option For Freightliner School Bus With 33 Inch Frame

Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 07/23/2024

Question:

Good morning, I am looking for a hitch for a 2000 Freightliner FL65 school bus. width between frame rails is 33 inches. Trailer weight is 6500 so I am thinking a class IV hitch. I am not seeing any way to search based on dimensions on the website. Please let me know if you have a hitch that will work. Thanks

Hi Ryne,

We can get your Freightliner bus a hitch, but what you'll need is a universal weld-on option, with the right one depending on the amount of drop you need from the frame. Both are Class V Curt hitches that have a 15,000 lb capacity, so more than enough for your needs; here are the options:

- 3" Drop From Frame: Curt Class V Universal Weld-on Receiver Hitch # 15901

- 10.865" Drop From Frame: Curt Class V Universal Weld-on Receiver Hitch # 15902

Each is designed to weld onto frames from 18" to 44" wide so they will fit nicely on your 33" frame.

Hey Ryne, how did things go with the Curt weld-on hitch for your Freightliner bus? Did one of the drop options end up matching your frame setup? Your update could make it easier for others working on similar buses.
