Question:

I have a magnetek model 3240 in my 94 Nuwa camper . It fails to charge the battery or has a direct short. What can I replace it with?

Getting 30 years out of your converter is pretty good, but it definitely is common for them to fail and need to be replaced. We can replace your Magnetek 3240 with another converter or replace the entire power center depending on what you're wanting.

If you're just wanting to replace the converter then you'll want to use the Progressive Dynamics 9200 Inteli-Power Converter # PD9245C. This converter is designed for use with lead acid batteries and has an internal charge controller that automatically switches between different charging modes to help extend the life of your battery.

If you're wanting to switch to lithium batteries then you can switch to the Progressive Dynamics 9100 Inteli-Power Lithium Converter # PD9145ALV. If you don't plan on doing the change for awhile then you can swap out the power center with the Progressive Dynamics 4000 Series Mini RV Converter w/ Charge Wizard and AC/DC Distribution Panel # PD4045KA, which has a switch to change between charging profiles so you can easily swap to lithium.

While you're swapping out the converter it's a good idea to check the wire gauge and to make sure that it's powered by a dedicated circuit. This means that the outlet that you plug it into is the only thing wired to the circuit so that you don't end up pulling too much and popping the circuit while it's charging the battery.
