What should I use to protect the bare metal that gets exposed when I enlarge the holes?

When enlarging to holes in a frame or even on a hitch like the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13382 we'll either spray some clear or black paint over the exposed metal or use a clear or black paint marker to help prevent rust and corrosion.

I'll typically also use a file to clear off any burrs there might be from enlarging the hole with a drill bit before painting it.
