Video Transcript for Easily Install Your Curt Class III Trailer Hitch - 2024 Subaru Crosstrek

Hi everyone. Jesse here with etrailer. Today we'll be taking a look at, and I'll show you how to install, the CURT custom-fit trailer hitch receiver on our 2024 Subaru Crosstrek. The Crosstrek is a car that you're gonna be taking out on adventures and road trips, so it really makes sense to add a hitch onto the back of it. It's gonna really open up your possibilities for storage outside the vehicle. Once you have this hitch installed, you can throw in accessories such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier, or you can even do some light-duty towing with it.

Just remember, if you plan on doing any kind of towing with your vehicle, you will have to add on trailer wiring to stay safe and legal while you're out there on the road. You can see the cross tubes are gonna be hidden behind your fascia. So, all you can really see is the receiver opening, and that's gonna be your standard two-inch by two-inch opening. So, most of your accessories will slide right in there. Then behind that is another standard 5/8-inch pinhole.

The pin and clip are not included with the hitch. However, we have many options available here at etrailer. Also, any accessory that you add on will most likely come with one included. Then for towing, we have a wire-type safety cable loop down here. Very easy to access with whatever style safety cable you have.

If you have an S style like this, or even a large clevis (metal clangs) like that. Now we'll take some quick measurements. We'll start with our ground clearance. From the ground to the top of the inside of the collar, is right at about 15 inches. You do have good ground clearance with these Subarus.

And then from the center of the pinhole to the edge of our bumper here, is right at about five inches. That number you wanna keep in mind for any folding accessories that you add on, to ensure they don't make contact with the vehicle. As for our weight capacities with this hitch, we have a gross trailer weight of 3,500 pounds. That's the amount of weight that you can pull behind the vehicle. And we also have a maximum tongue weight of 525 pounds, and that's gonna be the amount of weight pushing down on the hitch. Always be sure to double-check your owner's manual, and you want to compare all those numbers and go off the lowest rated component to stay safe while you're out there. All in all, if you're looking to add a hitch to your Crosstrek, you really can't go wrong with the CURT. If you have any questions or concerns about this hitch or anything else we offer here at etrailer, feel free to reach out to us. We'd be happy to get you pointed in the right direction. And when it comes to the installation with this hitch, it's honestly a pretty easy process. It does involve using a drill to enlarge some holes to get your hardware fed through. So, if that's not something that you're looking to do yourself, check out our dealer locator. You can find someone local to you that would be happy to get you set up. If you are looking to see how this gets installed, then just follow along and I'll walk you through the process. To begin our installation, we'll have to locate the holes in our frame that we'll be using to mount our hitch. So, there's gonna be three of these caps on both sides. We're just gonna pop all three of those out. Get them out of our way. (caps clattering) Just use a flathead screwdriver and get up under 'em and pop 'em out. (cap clanging) Now this rearmost hole, we will have to fish a carriage bolt down, and we're also going to do one with this forward-most hole. The center hole we're not gonna use, I just took the rubber cap off to make sure that our hitch sits flush. And with our access hole here, we are going to have to enlarge it. So, I'm using a burr bit. I'm just going to kind of slot it so that we can fit our hardware through it. (drill roars) Now we drilled it out and you just wanna double-check, make sure that your hardware will actually fit, and then we'll repeat that process on the other side. Now before we fish our hardware through, I'm going to scrape off some of this sealer here, just to make sure that our hitch sits flush. So, I'm just using a putty knife. You could also use a razor blade. We'll just peel a bit of this off. So, now we'll start fishing our hardware through. We'll start with our rear hole. So, I'll take the coiled end and feed it through that hole and bring it out our access hole there. May take some adjusting to get it all to line up. I can usually feel it with my fingers through our access hole. Bring it down. And then once you have that coil in, we'll take one of our square spacer blocks, we'll slide that through and push it up (spacer rasping) through our hole. (spacer bangs) Get that tucked in the frame out of our way. Then our carriage bolt will thread on to the coiled end. And depending on how large you made your access hole, it may be easier to (metal clanging) kind of flip this around (metal clanging) and push the bolt up backwards. (metal clanging) Get your hole wire (metal clanging) tucked up there. (metal clanging) Then we can pull the other end of the fish wire, and that carriage bolt will drop down. The forward hole is a little bit different because we're going to send it up the access hole but also take it down. So, we'll just take our spacer block and the carriage bolt and thread that carriage bolt on. Get that threaded on pretty good. And then we'll feed the carriage bolt up. (metal clanging) Get that pushed outta the way in our spacer block, (metal clanging) and then pull it down. I'd recommend grabbing extra set of hands. I have my good friend Daniel here to help me out. So we'll lift this up a bit and then get our fish wires fed through their corresponding holes, (metal clanging) and then will lift this up into place. I think just gotta get it worked around the exhaust. (metal clanging) That's really, your only obstacle. And get that down. (metal clanging) Make sure your carriage bolts pull down through your holes. (metal clanging) Pull the fish wire off, and then thread on one nut on both sides. That'll hold it up so we can get the other nuts installed. (bolt raping) Now we'll take our 19-millimeter socket and tighten all of our hardware down. (wrench roars) (wrench roars) Now we will take our torque wrench and torque all of our hardware down to the specifications in the instructions. (motor humming) (wrench clicking) Once you have all the hardware torque down, that's gonna do it for our look at and installation of the CURT custom-fit trailer hitch receiver on our 2024 Subaru Crosstrek.

The flat plate that holds the carriage bolt needs to be longer. It does not catch the sides, and allows the carriage bolt to free spin. I had to use an impact to tighten it, then go back and check torque several times to get it close.

As always, everything I get from e-trail fits like it should and goes on without issue. Love these guys.

Glad to hear it fit well for you, David! And thanks for the kind words! We do our best and it's always nice to hear when we are helpful! ^___^ What are you going to be using the hitch for?

Subaru XV Crosstrek

Solid product (I think my third hitch from e-trailer). Only comment, installation is pretty straightforward, but on the Crosstrek Wilderness, you will need a small grinder ( e.g. Dremel tool, or maybe rat tail file) to cut notches into the car frame. All good, it’s covered in the installation instructions, but not mentioned on the order page.

I have not yet installed this / put it to the test BUT I want to comment on a major concern I had upon placing my order, namely, the condition I should expect upon receipt. It's a heavy steel product and I had encountered numerous reviews of similar products ordered from etrailer that were received in bad shape / scraped up, requiring repair / repainting etc so that future exposure to the elements would not bring on rust. I was so concerned that upon receipt of notice that it had shipped, I called the author of the notice at etrailer, WilliamS, to express my concern. I have to say, Will's response was flip and extremely UNreassuring ... he basically said (sarcastically) whaddya expect when etrailer is shipping over 3,000 of these per day (really???) in a cardboard box, failure was bound to occur ... he said it happens 3% of the time. Not at all reassuring. So I am relieved to say that the product came through in excellent shape with only one small puncture in the cardboard box. Kudos to Kolton A, who is listed in the tracking as having packaged the product. I am extremely relieved.

Sorry to hear about your call to us John, we are definitely looking into it. I am happy to hear that your hitch got to you safely, and I am making sure that Kolton gets his kudos! I just messaged his supervisor to let him know. What do you plan on using your hitch for? What kind of adventures will it help you with....
