What To Do If You Find An Extra Wire When Replacing Your Trailer's Electric Jack

Updated 01/23/2023 | Published 01/21/2023

Question:

We have a 2019 Forest River Rockwood mini lite 2109s travel trailer that came equipped with a RAM 3500 electric jack. We want to replace the RAM jack with a Bulldog 4000-lb electric jack. The RAM jack has two wires...a black wire containing the in-line fuse, and a blue wire that disappears into the undercarriage of the trailer. The Bulldog jack has just one wire, which connects to the battery. What is the purpose of the blue wire connected to the RAM, and what do I do with it?

The Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3520-BBX we carry only has a single black wire used for powering the jack. My best guess is that the second wire you have is some sort of ground wire, but you'll need to trace it back towards the junction box that it's running to to see what the actual purpose is for it. Once you find what it's spliced to you can trace those wires to find out their purpose.

If you're not needing it for the Bulldog Powered Drive Trailer Jack # BD500199 then you could also just cut it off close to the frame and cap it with some electrical tape.
