Install Issues Using Dexter E-Z Flex Suspension Kit to Replace EQ-310 Equalizer

Updated 12/12/2022 | Published 12/11/2022

Question:

My axle spacing is 34 inches on my travel trailer, so I am in between the 2 sizes of Dexter EZ Flex equalizers. The original equipment was a triangle equalizer part number EQ-310. I tried installing the 33 inch Dexter EZ flex however it moves axles inwards to 33 inches and also allows leaf spring and shackle to make contact with frame when axle raises due to equalizer being smaller in height than original EQ-310 which is 4 inches. Because of this issue I switched to the EZ flex K71-653-00 for 35 inch spacing. After installing the EZ flex K71-653-00 the axle distance stayed 34 inches, however, the leaf spring is making contact with the equalizer. I just want to make sure that this is normal and will not affect performance. I am aware of the sizing requirements from Dexter, but my equalizer is in between both with a width of 6.25 inches and height of 4 inches.

In regards to trailer suspension, it's always best to swap parts with identical replacements when doing any work so you don't run into issues like you're having now with components binding or making contact. That said, I do understand wanting to upgrade from standard to cushioned equalizers. However, it doesn't look like the Dexter E-Z Flex Suspension Kit are going to work on this trailer due to their shorter height. I don't recommend using the kit if any of the suspension components are making contact which appears to be the case. This contact would be amplified out on the road. I instead recommend using the Road Armor Shock Absorbing Equalizer Kit part # LC696740 to replace the EQ-310 as it better matches the height and length and provides the same if not better cushioning as the Dexter E-Z Flex.
