Can Progressive Dynamics 60 Amp Control Center Be Used with 30 Amp Receptacle?

Updated 01/17/2025 | Published 11/14/2022

Question:

I currently have a 30 Amp inlet on my camper, are there any options to use the current inlet with this unit until I can upgrade the inlet to 50 Amp?

The amp rating of the control center units like the Progressive Dynamics 60 Amp # PD4560K18LS8 have more to do with their max electrical rating and less to do with what type of receptacle they are compatible with.

So, long story short is that you can use this larger unit until you upgrade your receptacle to 50 Amps. Please be mindful that you need to be checking the rest of your electric system as well since upgrading certain parts can allow more power through so you want to make sure you're protected as you go through each upgrade. Starting with the control center is a good idea since it's where your fuses and breakers live.

I'm looking to upgrade from a PD4060K to the 4500 series so I can add extra AC circuits, but still at 30 Amps incoming service. Your previous response to a question indicates, Yes, I can do this. Can I use the converter/charger unit from my 4060K in the new 4500 series, and if YES, can I buy the 4500 without the converter? Thx

@DanS You'll need to upgrade to 50A service in order to have 2 AC units on your trailer. Upgrading your converter and distribution panel is definitely part of it, but a 30A service won't be able to support 2 ACs so you're looking at a whole overhaul. I recommend the Progressive Dynamics 4500 Series # PD4560K18LS8 rated for 60A for your application. This requires a cutout of 13-1/4" tall x 10-1/8" long in order to fit it in place of your current setup. You'll also need to upgrade wiring and other connections so they are able to handle the 50A rating.

Thanks. Both ACs will have soft starts and one is only 9k. It may turn out that 30A is not enough, but I want to try, before I recable for 50A. Hence my question about the 4500 panel being useable with the 30A incoming. Also, can I save money by using the converter/charger I have in the 4060? Thx

@Daniel Got it. The 4500 panel will work with just the 30A, you just won't be able to take full advantage of the power the panel can handle. You might be able to find someone online trying to sell a 4500 unit without the converter/charger, but all of the new units come with the converter/charger so you'll be getting a full unit.
