Question:

I am looking for an entire electrical set up for a van conversion. I am looking at the Mighty Mini AC/DC panel and converter/ smart charger. If I was to install a inverter like the PD64FR, Is there any need for a panel with DC? In other words, what is the point in even having DC in the panel at all if the inverter makes it all AC? Could I just go.... battery, inverter/transfer switch, AC panel?

It all depends on what your objective is, you need to have a system that meets your power demands.

For RV's, the industry standard has developed to be AC/DC distribution panels combined with inverters and battery chargers all in one package. The Progressive Dynamics Mighty Mini AC/DC Panel and Converter/Smart Charger, # PD4045KA and the its other variations such as the 60 Amp, # PD4060K or 75 Amp, # PD4575K18LS8 are great examples. There are different manufacturers with varying sizes, quality and extra features but the basics is that these units provide a distribution point for the shore power that the RV is connected to at the campground, the power pedestal that is connected to the public power grid. Or, yes the generator as an alternative to the power grid. This serves the same purpose as the circuit breaker in a residential home and most will use the same breakers on the AC side of the panel. From this, you will have the same circuits and outlets you are familiar with from a residential home. However, it also contains a battery charger to charge your battery bank. From the battery bank you get the DC power of the distribution panel. The Progressive Dynamics Pure Sine Wave Inverter w/ Transfer Switch - Remote - 2,000 Watts, # PD64FR that you linked to, or something equivalent, is needed to provide AC power when not connected to the grid/shore power or a generator. This will use the stored energy from your battery bank, DC power, to provide AC power. From this, you can operate AC items such as a microwave from your battery bank.

If you are doing a van build, I do suggest that you have both a battery bank and the distribution panel at minimum. This will provide AC when connected shore power and along with a battery bank will provide you the needed DC to power fans, lights, and recharge your electronics. Add the inverter if you want AC power to operate a microwave or other AC powered devices from battery bank.

I suggest you also consider using the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger, # 331-BCDC1240D as it will restore your battery bank from the vehicles electrical system while driving.
