Was I Sold The Wrong Fastway e2 Hitch For a Trailer With 850LBS Of Tongue Weight?

Updated 08/03/2022 | Published 08/01/2022

Question:

I was told by my dealer to purchase the FA92-00-0800 for my new camper with a specified dry weight of about 5200 lbs and a tongue weight of about 500 lbs from the factory. The tongue weight figure was a gross misrepresentation. the measured tongue weight after adding about 115 lbs for the 2 propane tanks and a LiFePO4 battery with the front mattress removed is almost 800 lbs. By moving our heavy gear to the back of the trailer, I can get the tongue weight to about 850 lbs for towing. I have read that the actual tongue weight should fall in the middle of the range of the bars. Clearly, my 800 lbs bars are under-rated. I probably wouldnt care except the RAM 1500 truck seems to bounce even when coasting downhill and I was wondering if this could be the cause of the problem. When loaded, the camper weighs about 6400 lbs total. Thanks for any advice you may have.

With your trailer you should have been sold a Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-1000 as it is for trailers with a tongue weight of 600-1,000lbs. The dealer should have accounted for the additional weight of the battery and propane plus additional gear. This is something that I have seen far to often as they never account for all the additional weight of the gear. You can use the Replacement Trunnion Spring Bars # FA92-01-1099 with your Hitch # FA92-00-0800 to get the correct weight spring bars. This will help to reduce the bouncing you are getting as then the hitch will be able to properly distribute the weight across your Ram 1500.
