Troubleshooting Single Self-Adjusting Brake Assembly Repeatedly Over-Adjusting

Question:
I have one wheel assembly that the electric brake tends to over adjust. It gets to the point where I can barely turn the wheel when its off the ground and of course it gets very hot going down the road. I have to jack it up and back off the adjuster. It is a Dexter axle on a travel trailer. Can you tell me why? How do I remedy the issue? Thanks for your assistance.

It sounds like the adjustment mechanism is faulty on your brake assembly. When the brake shoes on self-adjusting brakes move too far before they touch the drums there is a pulley that spins the adjustment wheel. This takes the brake shoes out further until they are properly adjusted. I would say your brake assembly continues to spin the adjustment wheel even when the brake shoes make contact. Whatever the case may be, it is an issue with the brake assembly itself.
The solution in this case would be a replacement brake assembly. I would recommend replacing the brakes as a pair. The Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA will work well as a replacement for both sides. Once installed your over-adjusting issue should be taken care of.
