Do Electric Brake Magnets have Contonuity Between The Two Wires?

Updated 01/28/2025 | Published 01/18/2025

Question:

Do the electric brakes have continuity between both wires coming from the mega? When I check it with the meter it seems they are grounding out.

Hey Jason, thanks for reaching out. Yes, there should be continuity between the two brake magnet wires. One is for power and one is for ground, and either wire can be used for each function. Brake magnets are pretty simple to wire for this reason, so if you are not getting proper function on the wires it may be time for new magnets or new brake assemblies.

If you want to look into that I will just need to know the weight capacity of your axle and/or the brake assembly brand and size. Let me know in the comments below and I will get back to you.

Yeah, my problem is my brake controller not seeing the trailer and I from what I understand that is because the signal is not getting through to the brakes perhaps not sure. Try different controllers same problem. I’ve been trying to tract this problem down they suggestions be great option I saw the controller might be open circuit. I don’t know but everything seems to be wired, right Ideas let me know

@JasonP Hmmm there are a few things that may be causing this. Usually when we see a brake controller fail to detect the trailer it is because your brakes are not grounding properly. First thing I would do is check the grounds of the brake assemblies. You may even try running the ground wire from each assembly back to the main ground of the trailer. It could also be something as simple as rust/corrosion on the pins of your 7-way so check that too. It could be an issue with your brake switch wiring on the vehicle too. The link below will show you our article on troubleshooting brake controller issues. Let me know how everything goes. I will be here if you need anything else.
