Replacing/Upgrading 900 Series Magnetek 950 With Progressive Dynamics Converter/Smart Charger

Question:

I also need to upgrade from a Magnetek 50 amp but had heard that you’re not supposed to go UP in amperage because you could exceed the capacity of your wiring. I’m doing this in a 22 year old motorhome. Is the 60 amp PD model still appropriate for me?

You can definitely use this as an upgrade/replacement but you will need to verify the size wiring for charging your battery bank and upgrade that too if needed. If your currently installed converter is the 900 Series Magnetek 950, your DC output for charging the battery bank is 50-Amps and you probably have 8 AWG wire installed. The Progressive Dynamics Inteli-Power RV Converter and Smart Battery Charger, # PD9260C provides 60-Amps for charging the battery bank and 8 AWG is adequate for any circuit up to about 4 feet in length. If your current wire is not at least 8 AWG or, this battery charger will be mounted in a location that causes the charge circuit to be greater than 4 feet, upgrade your wire too.

You are correct that it is a good rule to follow of replacing with a similarly rated power converter/charger that matches factory installed. As described above, doing so will ensure you do not over tax the system. But simply ensuring you meet adequate wire gauge and choosing to upgrade that too if necessary easily allows you to increase abilty to increase the converters charge output.
