Question:

Hi Robin, I have a 2021 4Runner, that has a suspension lift of 3”. The stronger lift springs and shocks will help stiffen the ride with my trailer tongue weight of 400 pounds and behind rear vehicle axle interior cargo weight of 200 pounds. So estimating 600 pounds total tongue weight for load distribution hitch. My single axle 6x12 v nose 3000 lb cargo craft trailer I am setting up with your help will have electric brakes. It has a high profile with the trailer springs sitting above the axle (overslung) and the side wall height of 7 feet. So concerned about wind and sway. The v nose trailer has a short tongue, and I’m not sure which load distribution hitch with sway control is needed. Can you help with a recommended LDH with sway control? Thank you for your help.

In order to find out which hub and drum assembly fits your 3,500 lb axle on your Cargo Craft trailer you will need to know which bearings are on your axle. If you have a serial number on the axle you can probably get this information from the manufacturer. If not, you will need to look for part numbers stamped in your existing bearings or take some measurements. I recommend using a digital caliper like the # PTW80157.

Assuming you have the most common bearings on your 3,500 lb axle, and you need a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K you looked at would be a fine replacement. For brakes, I recommend the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3,500 lbs # AKEBRK-35-SA. These are self-adjusting brakes so you won't have to worry about making manual adjustments.

For an inexpensive controller for your 2021 Toyota 4Runner I recommend the Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller # 39510. There are cheaper ones out there but I would choose a proportional brake controller over a cheaper time delayed option. If you have the factory tow package you can use the # 3041-P for installation.

The short tongue on your trailer really limits you when it comes to a weight distribution hitch with sway control. I do have some possible solutions for you. You can use the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Clamp On - 8,000 lbs GTW, 750 lbs TW # BXW0750. This system has a tongue weight range of 550-750 lbs so I recommended verifying your tongue weight using a scale like the # C51701 with such a small range. Since you wouldn't be able to mount the normal brackets based on the design of your trailer, you can use the Blue Ox Signature Series Lift Brackets for SwayPro Weight Distribution Systems - Clamp On or Bolt On # BXW4021 and bolt the brackets on to the frame under the nose of the trailer like you would if it was exposed without the V nose. The one issue with this system is going to be the design of the clamps. You will need to get underneath in order to use the rotating latches with the included wrench. The other possible option for weight distribution with sway control would be the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control - Trunnion Bar - 8,000 lbs GTW, 800 lbs TW # RP66083. This has a broader tongue weight range at 400-800 lbs giving you more to work with. Again you would need the alternate brackets which would be the # RP58305. Your main issue with this setup would be the cam arms attaching to the trailer. While you may not have an issue with the nose interfering, I really can't say since installation depends on the frame as well as the distance back from the center of the coupler. I recommend looking at the instructions and measuring on your trailer to see if this would work for you. I have attached some additional review and installation videos for your reference.
