How to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2008 Ford Van

Today, in our 2008 Ford van, we're going to be taking a look at and installing a Tekonsha Voyager trailer brake controller, part number 39510. To help with our install, we're going to be using a Tekonsha plug-in wiring adapter for electric brake controllers for Ford, part number 3035-P. One feature of this brake controller is that it activates the trailer brakes in a proportion to your vehicle's braking action, automatically adjusting trailer brakes based on the acceleration of the tow vehicle. This is immediate and there is no pause, no time delay. This controller is designed to be mounted in multiple positions up to 90 degrees. It's designed to be used with a trailer with brakes from one to four axles. There's a manual override, so if you had an emergency situation you could apply the brakes on the trailer independently.

As you can see, whenever your trailer is hooked up you're going to have a green light. And as the controller starts to work it's going to change to red. It has a universal Tekonsha plug-in adapter. It has two controls on the side. This is your overall power level and you have a fine tuning power level on this side. Here it is installed.

Now we'll show you how to install it. This is our wiring that's going to hook from our factory wiring, which is a plug up in here. And this side will go to the back of your controller. So, we'll start by locating the connector, which on this van is actually taped to the harness that's right behind the emergency brake. We'll take your plug that's going to be corresponding to that and you'll snap it into position. You'll hear it snap.

That means it's connected. Then we're going to take our wire. We're going to route it up, out of the way of all of your moving components under here. In order to gain access, we're going to go ahead and pop this panel off. It's going to just pull off. We'll set this aside.

This will give us a little more room to see what we're going to be attaching it to. Because we have this bolster bracket in here it's going to be kind of hard to get access to the inside of there, so we'll just tie it up to the bottom side and make it come out like that. We simply came out of our plug, went up and I tied it to a metal brace here, came through the bottom of your diagnostic connector. We simply figured out how much wire we're going to need to our controller and I took the rest and bundled it up and tied it together. Now, we can put our cover back on. There are two clips at the bottom that are going to snap in. And then, a couple clips along the top and that's it. And then we have our plug where we need it to be and we're going to mount this metal bracket. There's two screw holes on each side. If you'd like to position it in a position that needs to be locked down then you put in all four. Or, if we're just going to use two, we're going to set it in the location we like, simply put our screws in. We just want to inaudible 00:03:34. In order to get in the position that's going to be best for you so you can see it from the seat, then you'll just take your connector, plug it in, now we can test it. And you'll see the light go from green to red as the brake's applied. And you can see in our tester also, as we apply the brake, it will start to go up on the gauge. That's going to wrap up our look and install of the Tekonsha Voyager trailer brake controller, part number 39510, on our 2008 Ford van. .
