Trailer Brakes Activate when Turn Signal Is On

Updated 08/07/2013 | Published 08/05/2013

Question:

Hi, I put all the purchased equipmnet in. Also brought a brake controller and a new male plug from the trailor to the new part I purchased from you. My problem is the brakes seem to slap when pedelated. I assume that I will need to adjust them. Not a problem, but my right side turn signal doesnt work and as odd as it sounds when I turn that side directional signal on I can hear that side brake slap ? In tune with the directional light speed. Any ideas ?

If the trailer brake magnet is energizing with the turn signal then the turn signal wire is either connected to brake magnet power wire or there is a short between the turn signal wire and the brake output wire on the 7-Way. First, lets make sure that you have the 7-Ways on the vehicle and on the trailer wired up correctly.

Take a look at the picture I have included. Ignore the colors and look at the functions then compare the diagram to how your 7-Ways are set up. It looks like you have installed # ETBC7 so I doubt that is the issue (since a 4-Way just plugs in to the adapter part to provide the light functions).

Also make sure that the ETBC7 white wire is grounded to the vehicle frame. On the trailer side you will also need to make sure that the 7-Way is clean and free of corrosion on the pins and in the back where the wires attach. Then make sure the main ground is attached to a clean and corrosion free bare metal surface.

Do the same ground check for each of the lights. Then inspect the wiring leading to the brake magnets and make sure there are no breaks in the wiring that might be touching bare metal. Make sure the magnet grounds are attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. Since the brakes are new it is highly unlikely that the magnets are bad.

I have included a couple of links that might also help you troubleshoot.
