How to Wire up the Optronics Trailer 7-Way A7WCB
Updated 08/05/2013 | Published 08/03/2013 >
Question:
I really like your videos and accompanying written instructions, they are generally very useful. In this instance, I would have liked you provide an approximate length of the black cover of the 7 wire cable as well as the length of insulation removed from each wire. Why did you attach the wires according to the description on the plug instead of according to the functions as used everywhere else and by position? I find this whole RV trailer wiring unnecessarily confusing and complicated. It should and could all be standardized by function and colour!

It is hard to say exactly how much of the black wire insulation was cut off of the 7-Way Round RV Style Trailer Connector # A7WCB, but after watching the video and having done this myself before, it looks like Rick cut off about 2 inches of the black portion and then about 3/8 of an inch of insulation per wire.
There is an industry standard for how 7-ways should be wired. If you check out the picture I attached you will see how they are typically wired. By function is how the connector should always be wired since wire colors can vary unfortunately.
I also attached an FAQ article on trailer wiring for you to check out also.
