BMW X5 Curt Echo Brake Controller and ETB7L 7-Way Vehicle Connector

I have a BMW X5, and since I couldnt tap directly into the light wires without making the computer mad, I installed the Curt powered tail light adapter. It works great for the trailer lights and keeps the cars light monitoring system happy. Now, I have a new camper. I have upgraded brake pads and rotors on the BMW and it has no problem stopping with the camper, but I want to hook up the campers brakes just in case. I noticed the brake controller instructions say I need to connect it to the wire coming out of the brake light switch. Thats something else the computer probably wouldnt be happy about. Can I connect the brake controller to the brake light wire that comes out of the powered adapter and keep everything isolated from the vehicle lights?

I would be happy to help you set up your BMW X5 for towing with a brake controller but what you have suggested will not work. You would be combining the brake and turn signals on one circuit. Basically, every time you turned on your blinker you would send power back to the brakes. I recommend adding the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 12 Gauge Wires item # ETBC7L to your vehicle. The item # ETB7L plugs into your existing 4-way trailer connector and also provides a brake control circuit which will give you control over your 2007 Forest River Rockwood Premier Camper's brakes.
I also recommend using the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 2 Axles - Proportional item # C51180. This brake controller plugs directly into your 7-way port, is controlled through your phone, and does not require you to hardwire it into your BMW X5.
