Will Trailer Hitch Adapter Reduce Tongue Weight Rating Of A Vehicle?
Published 08/13/2021 >
Question:
You say the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch receiver by 50. The manufacturer of my vehicle has a tongue weight limit which is less than the aftermarket receiver I installed. Will the adapter also reduce the vehicle manufacturers tongue weight limit by 50 percent?

Helpful Expert Reply:
You are correct that the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter # C45785 you were looking at will reduce the capacity of your trailer hitch receiver by 50%.
This will not necessarily reduce the tongue weight rating of your vehicle, as the hitch manufacturers test the hitches independently of the vehicle and have not tested the effects on a specific vehicle.
With that said I would reach out to the manufacturer of your vehicle to get there input on this, but until then I would error on the side of caution and operate under the assumption that the vehicle rating was reduced as well.
