Removing Exhaust Heat Shield When Installing Curt Class I Hitch on 2013 Nissan Altima

Updated 04/15/2013 | Published 04/11/2013

Question:

Hello. I have a 2013 Nissan Altima 4 door sedan. Im wanting to install a trailer hitch for towing a kayak trailer and 2 50 lb sea kayaks. I really dont want to drill into the trunk as Ive seen required for some setups. I am also skeptical about removing the exhaust heat shields as required by the Curt hitch will this not cause potential fire hazard?. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

As you can see in the photo I assembled from captured images from the install video, the mounting flange of the hitch provides as much heat protection as the heat shield that is removed and discarded. The steel of the hitch mounting flange is much thicker than that of the heat shield.

I checked with my contact in the engineering department at Curt Manufacturing, who assured me that the mounting flange will offer enough heat protection that a fire hazard will not exist.
