Question:
How important is it to torque the fastening bolts? Can I just tighten them down? Thanks

Expert Reply:
The hitch is rated for its given capacity when installed according to the installation instructions and that includes the torque ratings specified in the instructions. If they are too tight you can damage the hitch and vehicle frame. Not tight enough and the hitch could come loose.
If you do not have a torque wrench many auto parts stores will loan out tools. I recommend calling around to a few places to see if they have a tool loan program so you can torque down the hitch hardware to where it needs to be.
