How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2013 Toyota RAV4


Today, on our 2013 Toyota RAV4, well be installing the Curt Two Inch Receiver Tube Hitch, part number C13149. This is what our hitch will look like once its installed. Next well be going a couple of measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper, is three inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 13 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack or cargo carrier.

To begin our install, well first need to remove the tow hook here on the driver side. The tow hook is secured by two bolts and securing it to the frame at the weld nuts. The weld nuts are built into the frame by the manufacturer. Well go and remove these bolts, and set the bolts and tow hooks aside, as they will not be reinstalled. Well be using the weld nuts into the frame by the manufacturer.

Starting from the end of the frame here on the driver side, well be using the first and the fourth attachment point. On the passenger side, we can count the stickers that cover up the weld nuts or attachment points. Starting from the end of the frame, it will be the first and the third attachment point. Now, to gain easier access here on the passenger side, well go ahead and lower the exhaust. To lower the exhaust, were using spray lubricant on the rubber isolators, and never remove the rubber isolators from the metal hanger.

Once we use a pry bar to remove the rubber isolator, well go ahead and carefully let the exhaust hang down out of the way. Now, with all four weld nuts exposed, were ready to go ahead and install the hitch. Well use the new hardware provided, the 12mm bolt and half inch concrete tooth washer. The teeth of the washer will face the hitch. Now, it's a good idea you'll need an extra set of hands to help to hold the hitch while you install the fasteners.

Once install each fastener finger-tight, now well go ahead and run them down. Next, we'll torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now, with our hitch secured and torqued specifications, well go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. That complete the install of Curt Two Inch Hitch, part number C13149, on our 2013 Toyota RAV4. .
