Video Transcript for Yakima Bike Racks Replacement SpeedKnob Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the replacement speed knob and wedge assembly for the Yakima bike racks, part number 8880508. The Yakima replacement speed knob is to be used with the Full Swing, Swing Daddy, Ridgeback and Full Tilt bike racks when their speed knobs are either damaged or the threads at the end are stripped out. It comes with the black knockout here which you're going to remove that and it has the control key to remove the lock core from your previous speed knob to replace it into this one. To get started we'll first remove our wedge piece here by unscrewing it and set it aside now we'll grab our damaged speed knob and start replacing it as well. Now we'll move on to our bike rack and have our Yakima Ridgeback here on our table and the issue with is the thread is stripped out in our wedge. We'll push that off to the side, remove our speed knob as well, now we'll get our new one and start installing it. First since this is a Ridgeback, we'll have to remove this top piece from the wedge. Take our allen tool, unscrew those two allen screws, move onto the one on the inside.

Now we can grab our new wedge and install this piece on top of it. What this piece actually does is it takes up the additional space on our Ridgeback so it'll fit properly in a two inch hitch. If you we're to convert this into an inch and a quarter you would remove this piece again. Finally, our second screw, one last turn to make sure it's nice and tight. Next we'll move onto our lock core switch out here. To remove this plastic cap, we'll take a small flat bladed screwdriver and just pop that out, very easy, and then we'll take our master key here put it into the core and it pulls out like so. Again, very easy.

To place it into our new lock, we'll push it in holding onto the end of the core and pull it out. Now we're ready to install this. We'll take our lock washer and install it on our replacement speed knob here and we'll install it at the end of the shank like so. Then we'll take our wedge and we'll just start to screw it in on the inside. You see the cutout here, you want to make sure that the wedge fits along that area. Here's the end of our speed knob so we'll just match them up, just start threading it in so it catches.

Now we can place it into our vehicle, slide it into our trailer hitch and go by the normal installation procedures for this bike rack. Now we'll go into the end here and tighten down our new knob. As we tighten it down, you'll notice that the shake and play has gone away which means it's working properly. All right, it looks like we're ready to go, we'll lock it into place so it's secure in the vehicle and now we can load up some bikes. There you have it for the replacement speed knob and wedge assembly part number 8880508.

Once sorted out, everything works fine. I had to use parts from both old and new speedknob assemblies to make it work. Yakama says nothing about there being two speedknobs, but they are different (length, I think - so I probably used the new head and the old threaded rod/wedge, can't remember exactly). Needed one because the car dealer backed up into a steep bank and rendered the knob useless.

For those of you looking for a replace wedge assembly for Thule racks this one works on the T2 Pro XT2 with 1.25" hitch. I needed to add a couple washers but otherwise it works great!

by:

Happy with product, waited a while since out of stock. Didn’t include a lock as detailed in the instruction sheet.

Sorry for the confusion. The SKS control key should be included to change the SKS lock core which is sold separately. It is item # Y07202.

Good, gave bike rack a new chance.

by:

Did exactly what it was supposed to do and he made sure the part I needed was correct for the model bike rack I had. Would def purchase from again.

by:

Excellent service and timely delivery. This bike rack part makes the rack usable again for a fair price.

by:

This was an exact fit replacement for the existing piece. Relatively easy to replace and has worked fine since.

by:

This is a great product. I highly recommend it.

by:

This is the third time that I have had occasion to use etrailer since I purchased a bike rack for my car a number of years ago. Each time the service is great--the website is easy to use, the goods are reasonably priced and they get to me in just a few days. In this case, I needed a new Speedknob and wedge assembly used to tighten my Yakima Ridgeback bike rack into my hitch (the old one stripped out). I got it quickly and once again, I'm ready for another spring of bike riding.

Great—I just put the bike rack on the car getting ready for the spring and all is fine.

by:

i lost a tiny part of this part which is essential for my bike rack. i couldnt find it in seattle. etrailer supplied. and:i camped with my bike last weekend. fabulous trip. thank you etrailer.

by:

Fast shipping,excellent product

by:

Considering the threaded portion of the rod snapped off in the block, I'd say this thing isn't great. It was only a few years old and gets fair use but nothing extreme. It seems to be the only option for replacement.

That said, etrailer was great. Made it easy to find and order. The order also came much faster than expected.

by:

My rating is for etrailer! Yet again, they come through with the parts, when the manufacturer doesn't have them. My bike rack is awesome, but this part of designed so poorly, I anticipate having to come back to replace another in a few years.

by:

I backed up into a very high curb and broke the knob on my bike rack. All that I needed was a new lockable knob for a Yakima HighLite, 2-bike rack. The only one available for that particular rack comes as part of a Replacement Mast with Anti-Rattle Knob and Adapter Sleeve, I thought that instead I would try the Replacement SpeedKnob and Wedge Assembly and see if it would work. I am pleased to say that it does! I was able to take both apart, the interior knob parts are the same, so I was able to just use the new knob on the old rack and save

Great products and service from etrailer!

by:

We purchase from trailer from time to time and are always impressed with all phases of the transactions

by:

Delivered quickly, perfect part.

by:

The original speed knob was no longer tightening the bike rack. I thought threads might have been at least partially stripped. This new one is doing its job. Fortunately I had an Allen wrench that fit the screws to swap out the old wedge for the new, which at first didn't really look like an Allen would work. A simple instruction sheet and even an included wrench (think IKEA) would be very helpful helpful.

by:

Great service fast delivery price accordingly. Thank you very much.

by:

I've had my SwingDaddy bike rack for many years and use it almost everyday. Once in a while I get too close to things and scrap the knob pretty hard. I got this as a backup, in case I need to replace it. I love the rack and don't want to be without it for even a day!

by:

Great service, timely delivery.

by:

I really enjoy the customer service at etrailer.
There was a slight mixup on my order but etrailer sent the part out right away, no questions ask.

by:

easy to install but just broke. Need to order another one to make the bikerack work

by:

Finding this replacement was awesome. No need to purchase a new bike rack. The product was a direct replacement. Everything was made easy with the video found on the website. Highly recommend this replacement.

by:

Product arrived on time and with great communication. The videos the site has for some of the products are it's best part. Very helpful in determining the right product

by:

My order arrived very quickly, faster than expected!

by:

Exact OEM part! Delivered sooner that anticipated!

  • Replacement SpeedKnob for Yakima LiteRider Bike Rack
I do have an option for you but the Yakima LiteRider Bike Rack does not use a SpeedKnob. The SpeedKnob is for newer Yakima Hitch Bike Racks and is a bit different than the locking mechanism for the Yakima LiteRider. I know this is not what you are going to want to hear but I am afraid the only way to replace the locking knob on the Yakima LiteRider and get it back up and running is with a new mast/shank, the Replacement Mast with Anti-Rattle Knob and Adapter Sleeve part # 8890343. You should be able to free up these pieces so they can easily slide...

  • Frame Cradle Replacements for Yakima Ridgeback Bike Rack
Both of the frame cradle part numbers you mentioned are correct for the Yakima Ridge back bike racks. The part # 8880597 and # 8880597 are needed for each bike to be held so basically one would be the left side and the other the right. The one has a anti-sway cradle that grabs the frame tube to stabilize it and the other does not. So you'd to order one of each of these for each bike that would get loaded on your rack.

  • Yakima Ridgeback Speedknob Replacement
By design the Speedknob on your Yakima Ridgeback part # Y02458 should spin freely when it is in the locked position this prevents anyone from being able to remove your rack from the vehicle. • How To Remove Stuck SpeedKnob on Yakima RidgeBack Bike Rack
I spoke with Yakima about removing the SpeedKnob on the Yakima RidgeBack Bike Rack and she stated that you need to just use more force since the threads are likely stripped. This can then be replaced with the Replacement SpeedKnob and Wedge Assembly for Yakima Bike Racks part # 8880508.
