Question:
Hi, I am looking to transport 3 Pelican Mustang kayaks atop a 2016 Toyota 4Runner. My factory crossbars are 39.5 inches. My question is, using a stacker like the Thule, will the width of my crossbars suffice or do I need longer bars? Thanks!

The Thule The Stacker - Rooftop Kayak Mounting System # TH830 or Rhino-Rack Nautic Stack Kayak Carrier w/ Tie-Downs 4 Kayaks # RRS520 are excellent carriers for 3 or 4 kayaks. The Thule Stacker comes with enough tie-downs for one kayak, use Thule Quick Draw Tie-Down Ropes w/ Ratchets and Strap Loops # TH855XT for an extra kayak. The Thule Stacker only requires a minimum of 26" crossbar spread, so it will mount onto the factory crossbars of your 2016 Toyota 4Runner without an issue. I do, however, think that your 39.5" long crossbar will not be long enough to fit 3 kayaks. According to my research, the Pelican Mustang kayaks measure 14" tall, so when 3 of them are mounted on their sides you are looking at a total length of 42" across your roof.
For a longer crossbar setup you can use Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack - Aero Crossbars - Raised, Factory Side Rails - Aluminum - 50" Long # MPG215 which is a very economical option. This will be long enough for your 3 kayaks since it is 50" long. It also has a built-in top channel which allows you to mount various accessories. The weight capacity for this roof rack is 165lbs but you will want to check your owner's manual to verify the roof capacity. I have attached several demonstration videos that you can check out.
