Brake Controller and 7-Way Trailer Connector Installation for 2021 Toyota Highlander

Question:

Hi I have a 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE and am looking for a 7 pin round wiring harness as I pull a trailer with electric brakes. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks

Since from what it sounds like, your Highlander doesn't have the factory tow package that includes a 7-way on the rear bumper, you'll need to do a hardwire installation.

For starters, you'll need a functional 4 pole trailer wiring connector to establish a connection to the vehicle's taillight circuits. I'd recommend using the Tekonsha # TK99FR. I'll link the installation instructions for you.

For an easy to install brake controller, you can't go wrong with the Curt Echo, part # C51180. The controller is wireless, it'll communicate via a smart phone app so you can control the braking from the passenger compartment. You'll also need the # ETBC7L kit, which includes an adapter to convert the 4 pole provided by the # TK99FR into a 7-way. The kit includes the wire, circuit breaker and hardware necessary to make the connection to the vehicle battery to power the controller. That's the only wiring that will be needed, so the install is pretty painless.
